Both Ifá and tarot are sometimes placed under the broad English word “divination,” but that shared label can hide how different they are. If you arrive at Ifá through tarot, astrology or another spiritual practice, understanding the distinction helps you approach Yorùbá tradition on its own terms.
Ifá is a Yorùbá knowledge and divination system
Ifá is rooted in Yorùbá culture and is associated with Ọ̀rúnmìlà and a large oral and literary corpus. UNESCO recognises the Ifá divination system as Intangible Cultural Heritage and describes it as a system of signs interpreted by a trained diviner to guide important personal or collective decisions.
Its corpus is organised into 256 Odù and the many ẹsẹ̀, or verses, associated with them. Traditional practice involves training, transmission and interpretation within a living religious and cultural tradition.
Tarot uses a deck of cards
Tarot developed in a different historical and cultural setting. Modern tarot divination generally works through a deck of cards whose images and positions are interpreted in a reading. It does not use the Odù Ifá corpus, the Ifá divination chain or sacred palm nuts, and it is not a branch of Yorùbá religion.
The biggest difference is not the tool
The deeper distinction is context. Ifá sits inside a Yorùbá cosmology involving concepts such as Orí, Òrìṣà, ancestors, character and destiny. Its signs are interpreted through a body of inherited verses and practitioner knowledge. Treating Odù as if they were simply “Yorùbá tarot cards” removes that cultural and theological framework.
Can you practise tarot and still learn about Ifá?
Learning about one tradition does not require pretending the other is identical to it. People come to Yorùbá spirituality from many backgrounds. A respectful starting point is to learn the language and concepts of the tradition before translating everything into a system you already know.
