Odù is one of the words people encounter very quickly when they begin learning about Ifá, and one of the easiest to flatten into something it is not. An Odù is not a zodiac sign, personality type, or a card pulled for the day.
Odù belongs to the structure of Ifá itself: the divination and knowledge system preserved in Yorùbá communities and across parts of the African diaspora.
What does Odù mean in Ifá?
UNESCO describes the Ifá literary corpus as comprising 256 Odù, subdivided into verses known as ẹsẹ̀. Each Odù has its own divinatory signature. In traditional consultation, a trained diviner determines the relevant sign through the Ifá divination process and interprets verses connected with it in the context of the question or situation.
That matters because an Odù is not simply a short definition. The corpus carries stories, poetry, proverbs, ethical teaching, historical memory and guidance. Reducing an Odù to a single keyword strips away the very thing that makes the tradition rich.
Are there really 256 Odù?
Yes. The Ifá system is conventionally organised into 256 Odù. The structure is often described as sixteen principal signs and the combinations formed from them. The associated body of ẹsẹ̀ is much larger and is transmitted through trained practitioners and lineages.
Can a website tell me “my Odù” from my birthday?
Not in the sense of an Ifá divination. A traditional Ifá consultation does not work by converting a birth date into an Odù. The sign is determined through a divination process interpreted by a trained practitioner.
